Hi Chris,
You'll be happy to know that there are HOV lanes (carpool lanes) that allow
motorcycles as well as no tolls during commute hours. What Justin wrote is
correct. It's not illegal to lane-split. CHPs can and will pullyou over if
they think you're being a danger to outher motorists.

Don't split if you feel uncomfortable about it. You are loosing you "space
cushion" in traffic. That said, I split each day I ride to work. It's a
necessity in the SF Bay area. I am a slow splitter so I usually tuck myself
in a lane an wave riders behind me to pass.
