[ST] Poorly running RS

I hadn't reported this problem to the list, but now that I have some
answers, I thought I'd send a note to you all.

After returning from the Western Rallye, my RS (the only RS there -
what happened to my brothers and sisters?) was exhibiting some
problems. It was misfiring at idle and when cruising at steady
throttle, there was definite surging. I was attributing it to perhaps
having filled up with some bad gasoline at the last stop. I tried a
fuel drier, in case there was some water in it, but that wasn't the
case. My other thoughts were that either I'd managed to foul a plug,
or that I'd had suffered a corroded connection due to washing the grime
of 2800 miles off of it. It was due for a scheduled 12k service in a
couple of weeks, so I decided to wait until then and have the shop
check it out (this is the same shop that was trying to fix Patti's
Booh).

The service manager called me this morning with the diagnosis: there is
a stepper motor that allows air to be bled into the throttle bodies
when the throttle plates are closed, such as when idling. It turns out
that the body of the stepper motor is cracked, allowing air to bleed in
at all times, not just at idle. Since the EFI doesn't know about the
extra air, it is not able to adjust the fuel mixture, so the motor runs
lean and this causes the missing and surging.

That's the good news: the mechanic was able to determine the cause.
Now, the bad news: no replacement is in stock and it has to be priority
ordered from Triumph (either TOA or the factory; I wasn't clear on
which). I sure hope I don't fall into the delivery problems STeve
Duncan has been having... The service manager said he expected the
part to be here by late next week; I hope he is right.

Now I face at least of week of no RS fix! :-(
