They are both great bikes...
I agree. I think it comes down to what you value more: convenience (ST) or sporting ability (RS). Neither Sprint lacks much in either area, but the ST leans a bit more towards convenience (hard bags, more comfortable riding position) and the RS a bit more towards sporting ability (better ground clearance, more agressive riding position). Plus, like Mr. Stainkey said, your personal sense of aesthetics plays a role. I too chose the RS over the ST mostly because I prefered the looks of the RS, even though I really dig hard bags.
