[ST] Patch or replace?

I dropped by KC Engineering today to get the rear (D205) replaced,
after I picked up a nail yesterday.  They suggested that since it had
<1000 miles on it, I might want to patch it rather than replacing it.

Based on no hard evidence at all, this didn't feel like such a great
idea, so I said to just replace it.  ($170 total, 850 miles on the old
one.  $2/mile.  Wow.)  

Are patched tires as good as new ones?  On a car I'd just do it, but
on a bike?
