[ST] Front Sprocket Removal

Hi all,

Well I've gotten me a 17 tooth sprocket and went to fix it on, only to find
that I didn't have a socket the same size. I've measured across the flat
and it looks like it might be a 36mm am I correct ? Also, tried a large
ring spanner (an old whitworth size that I can't read due to corrosion on
the spanner but it was a good fit), but as the handle was coming close to
frame I didn't dare put all my force onto it. When I get the correct
socket and apply an extension bar, do you have to put it in gear and have
the brake on in order to hold the shaft still, or is it a wrong way thread.
Any help from someone who has already done this simple task would be
appreciated.

Thanks in anticipation
Black Dawg
