Hey Dennis,

STeve and Robert all ready gave you some great advice especially the
stretching.

I'm getting long in the tooth as well :-) So last year when I prepared
myself for a 6K trip (in July through the SW!) I focused on strengthening
my back. I have a bad back so I did lots of abdominal exercises as well as
some other upper body stuff. This helped me on days when I did 300-600
miles. I also found some good stretches for my hip flexors since they
would be in one position most of the time.

When I was near Las Cruces, NM, I bought one of those cooling scarves. The
ones that you submerge in water and it swells and keeps your neck cool.
This works! I read about it in a long distance article some where, I think
MCN a couple years back. I even placed it in a freezer as the next day's
ride was going to be in 100+ weather.

One last thing that I'll offer, obey you body. If you feel tired, don't
push it. Get off and rest a bit and then re-mount. You know yourself and
you know your limits. We all want you and your Mrs. to get there and back.

Best regards and have a great trip to the Eastern Rally!
