You've gotten a lot of good info from other LD riders, especially pertaining
to heat. I'm not sure why you feel "beat up" after riding a while (I'm the
same age, BTW) but, in addition to everything else you've heard, I have one
more thought, FWIW.
Pay attention to how much tensing up you're both doing when you ride. I
occasionally "check in" with muscles in my neck, back, hands, arm muscles,
etc. and have found that I can relieve a lot of discomfort just by paying
attention to staying loose.
