[ST] 95 RON Explained
The octane rating you see at the pump is rated as AKI (Anti-Knock Index).
The AKI is an average between RON (Research Octane Number) and MON (Motor
Octane Number).... or RON+MON/2 = AKI. This is abbreviated as R+M/2 on the
pump. A fuel rated 95 RON usually has a MON of about 85... Making the AKI
(Pump octane) 89. Triumph recommends using a pump rating of 89. I can
explain RON and MON in better detail....if anybody cares!
The octane rating has nothing to do with mileage or performance...it is to
control "knock". You may see a slight performance edge over time when
consistently using high-grade fuel, but this is due to the cleaners and
purity of using a higher quality fuel...not the octane.
I use a 91 AKI because I like spoiling my bike and wasting money.
Cheers,
mitch
