I have a feeling that this socket/plug is more of a standard in Europe --
hence BMW use

Yes, there is provision for two-wire hookup and no (at least in the case of
the JD part), the wire doesn't come with it

And there's no provision for an inline fuse -- the Triumph socket is fused,
but at a higher current than you may be comfortable with for your intercom
