Even the quietest helmet available will still generate enough noise to
permanently damage your hearing over time. See the article in Motorcycle
Consumer News at <http://www.mcnews.com/articles/helmet.htm>; after all
the capsule helmet reviews there's a section titled "Noise Levels." In
summary, at 80 MPH helmets will generate between 103 dBA and 106 dBA,
and OSHA says you begin to get cumulative hearing damage at 100 dBA for
two hours. According to hearing specialists, to prevent hearing loss,
noise levels shouldn't exceed 75 dBA for all-day exposure...
If earplugs are a new thing for you, Riders Wearhouse has some nice
sampler packs that let you inexpensively try different shapes to find
ones that fit you the best. Take a look at <http://www.aerostitch.com/>;
select "Neck/Ear Protection" from the "Off and Riding" category, then
click the "Next Page" icon in the upper right. There are two sampler
packs listed on page two, one that contains disposable plugs and one
that contains reusable ones.
