Re: [ST] RS versus ST

Ken, as you probably know there are several significant differences between
the two bikes and they are inter-related. The biggest difference comes from
the lack of lower fairing, which while certainly providing a quantifiable
weight saving also takes the subjective bulk away. Furthermore the
headlight fairing is both slimmer and shorter further contributing to the
lack of bulk. In my opinion this is the greatest contributor to the feeling
that the bike is more tossable. That being said about the fairing, I
certainly missed the ST fairing this weekend while trying to get some
running in miles done here in Pennsylvania.

The change in the steering geometry also helps make the bike feel more
tossable. In addition, the lower clip-ons get my upper body more over the
front wheel. I was expecting to have comfort issues as a result. However,
after a 150 mile ride to Allentown from Harrisburg on Saturday, I was
surprised to find that this was not the case. I have a track day scheduled
in May and I certainly expect to notice a handling difference at that point.

As to dislikes, the gear box so far is horrible especially when cold and I
cannot get neutral going up the box. In other words, I go from first to
second and back down to get neutral. I am looking forward to it easing up
as people here on the list say it will. The other issue I have is the weird
clutch lever, but that is really no big deal.

FYI, the bike goes for the 500 mile service this weekend and will have a Two
Bros Ti pipe installed as well as a K&N air filter. The next set of
modifications will be GSG frame protectors (via Jack Lilley) and the Triumph
hugger. I will not be changing the tires until they actually need
replacing. As to a replacement tires, I had Michelin Pilot Sports on the ST
and they were fantastic as well as looking great. However, I am seriously
considering Avon AV36IIs (I have forgotten the rear model - AV43?) as
Motorcycle News liked them and they are a bit less expensive.

Cheers!
