[ST] Southwestern Nevada

I'm headed from San Francisco to Las Vegas next week, and returning
the following week.

My usual routine is to leave San Francisco in the late afternoon, do a
high-speed and boring run to Bakersfield, get a good night's sleep,
then go wandering to Vegas from there via whatever set of squiggly
lines looks interesting that day. The return trip is generally the
reverse of that, although do the Bakersfield to SF route by going west
from Buttonwillow, and then up the coast or 101 if I'm tired.

This time, I'm thinking about a different route back-- a friend of mine
has a house in Wellington, NV (maybe 30 miles SE of Lake Tahoe) and I
may head for there on the way home.

Which brings me to my question... what sorts of interesting roads are
there between Las Vegas and Lake Tahoe? If I take this route, is there
anything in particular I should be concerned about (e.g. gas) ? Are
there any must-ride roads, or any I should avoid?
