I'm not sure what the problem is with your lower gas milage but I have over 
15,000 on my 2000 ST, it will be one year old this May 10th (happy birthday 
to Betty).  Many (most) of those miles are at 90+ (and above) some is city 
driving, freeway congestion, stop & go, ect...... My milage is incredibly 
consistant.  45-50 mpg no matter how hard (or slow) I ride.  Three weeks ago 
I took a 3 day 1,500 miler up though the Ozarks, one 150 mile loop was done 
almost completely at a ton plus (man, THAT is one fun stretch of road, fast 
sweepers, no traffic, few side roads) and still 45 mpg.  Must be something 
wrong with y'alls rides.  Don't know what.
