<smart-arse mode on>Well, in defence of the law (which normally needs none).
You are supposed to make sure the vehicle is roadworthy at all times (not
just at the time of the MOT test). Bald tyres are dangerous for yourself and
other people on the roads too, if it blows or you need to stop quickly. Try
explaining why your braking distance wasn't short enough to the parents of
the kid you just ran down.<smart-arse mode off>

Still, it's stupid that the bike can't be ridden until it gets an MOT - just
replacing the tyres would really be enough (to any reasonable person). I
guess the bill were just having a bad hair day. AND it's a real bummer when
they do go off so quickly.
