No question here, ride north of Flagstaff (a couple hours but WORTH IT)
and see the Grand Canyon. It really is one of those places that every
person must see at least once in his life. If there were to be a
western rally planned there I'd go in a heartbeat (hint hint!)

I'd suggest an overnighter if for no other reason than to watch the sun
set AND fall over the canyon and then the stars come out . Camping
inside the park is by permit only and they DO check for permits.
<Ahem> What I did, and loved, was camped off the side of the road in
the Kebab forest just outside the park, just get far enough from the
road that you aren't seen or heard and people will leave you alone. The
stars at night (are big and bright, clap clap clap clap) are simply
unbelievable, another reason to camp - I have NEVER experienced anything
as singularly spectacular as the 48 hours I spent in and around the
canyon area. No dangerous critters, other than the 2 legged kind of
course, but the sound of the coyotes howling will send shivers down your
spine.

If you do camp be sure to take some warm clothes, it gets COLD at night
in the desert. When I did it all I had was some mosquito netting and
newspapers to cuddle up with. It was worth it though.

The Anastazi (spelling?) indian ruins in the area are mindblowing too,
especially in the painted desert area.

Think I may have chosen next years vacation again.
