I had something similar, too, beginning of this year (with my '00 Sprint ST):
The bike started quite normal but after one kilometre or so (in the city) it
just died. I even wasn't able to get it started again, so I called a friend and
he gave me "starting help" (is it called like this in english?) with his car.
The bike after that run some minutes without any problems - I just waited with
running engine as I thought battery may be somehow low - but died up again. I
wasn't able then to recover it. The dealer found out that within the
light-machine (right expression?) one of the two coals which take the tension
was not in place and he had to replace the _complete_ light-machine to solve
this problem (although Kawasaki uses somehow the same coals ...). But as it was
a case of guarantee I didn't care too much about the 1300 DM (about 600 US$).

Maybe you can have this checked? (Without too many costs ...?)
