That was Lesson #1 -- don't jam on the brakes when your detector goes 
off. It's a tell-tale to an officer, plus since it's coming "out of the 
blue" to anybody following behind you, you could get rear-ended by an 
inattentive driver. Completely back out of the throttle, and use some 
emergency brake (check the rear first!) if you're in a car and really 
need to slow.

Lesson #2 -- your detector is only one source of information. Use your 
eyes and scan the sides of the road, overpasses, and ramps as far as you 
can see. If you see folks up ahead hitting their brakes, it's a good 
indicator that they may be coming up on an officer parked on the side.
