FYI, Motorcycle Consumer News has a review in this month's issue of an
electronic balancing unit that they liked quite a bit. It's made by
Twinmax and costs $80; see
<http://www.adventuremotogear.com/twinmax.htm>. They claimed it was as
accurate as BMW's custom, $1,000 tool, and a lot easier to read than
mercury sticks that bounce around.
You pick one cylinder to be the reference cylinder, then bring the other
two into balance one at a time. They used it on a Daytona, so you
shouldn't have any problem using it on an ST/RS.
