Re: [ST] More Cable Questions

Just a thought on all these clutch cable failures. Was anyone able to
retain the swage end after failure? If so, did the cable pull out of the
swage or did the cable actually break?

Two theories:
1) If the cable pulled out: The cable was not pressed far enough into
the swage then the rotational forces on the swage caused the cable to
loosen and pull out.

2) If the cable broke: The swage was too large for the hole in the
handle and the rotation of the swage, in respect to the directional pull
of the cable, caused the cable to suffer metal fatigue.

My 2000 ST went just over 12,000 miles with out significant signs of
wear. If I get a 2001, you can bet your bottom dollar that I will get
myself a spare one.

And while I'm on the topic; what are the earliest and latest dates of
manufacture of the bikes with bad cables?
