Perhaps I'm just misunderstanding your post, but I think my mirrors are
mounted differently (1999 ST). On my bike (did they change this after '99?)
the mirror stalk end slides over a vertical plastic (ABS?) rod. There are
then 4 slightly domed washers, and finally a washer-like plate with tabs
within the hole that grips the post (stop laughing). The domed washers are
alternated up-down-up-down, so that they have a spring effect
(unfortunately, not "springy enough"). I suppose I could put a bolt through
the post, but since it is taller than the stalk/washer combo, I'd need to
fabricate some kind of bucket shaped piece to hold the group tight. Is my
setup different, or do I have it all wrong?

About the new ST vs new VFR:

Both the original R1 and the GSXR-1000 sold a ton when they came out, but in
different years. I think if they had both come out at the same time, it
would have hurt sales for both. The motorcycling market (at least in the
US) has a fairly short memory. The "newest thing" usually sells pretty well
at first, and then tapers off. If Triumph had an inkling that Honda was
going to put out a completely revised version of the ST's main competition
(not to mention the release of the Futura), it might be wise from a sales
point of view to wait until next year for a large makeover. By then the
Futura and the VFR will appear to be the "old" model/technology and the new
Sprint will be the newest thing and sell better.

Of course, I don't have any idea whether this is the case or not.
