front sprocket change

Hello, I'm new to the list have an 01 RS and love it!!
I want to change the front sprocket to a 17 or 18 tooth,
not sure which  yet.. I have been reading the archives and
an confused as to if I have to shorten the chain to use either of these
sprockets. Would like to hear from anyone
who has done this mod..
