A similar situation happened to an attendee at the first TSRA East rallye.  
Fortunately I was carrying a spare shifter rod and was able to loan it to 
Nick so he could continue riding.  When he got home he got a replacement from 
his dealer, and low and behold it was steel.  Triumph updated this part a few 
years ago in the spares dept but didn't do a recall.  I don't think enough 
have failed to warrant a recall.  Now that I said that I'm sure I'll regret 
it(donning my asbestos undies)
