I haven't noticed any trouble with going from 1st to 2nd with my 4 month 
old ST (3500Km). Could change gear with just socks on! But then, I would 
usually be very gentle and short shift at 3000 while the engine is so cold, 
and match the revs too. It can't be an easy life for the cogs in that cold 
stiff oil. Once it's warmed up, shifting out of 1st is fine and almost 
'clicky' no matter what the revs. And getting better all the time.

Have you checked the clutch cable free-play?
