hehehe.......
I have the exact same symptoms on my '99. A couple of days after I bought
it, filled up the tank, went for about 130 mi, it dropped to empty, light
came on and I pulled into nearest gas station. Still half full. Refused to
come off of "empty" on the gauge for a day or so and then started working
again. Until it got to half tank low when it dropped to empty again
(w/attendant low fuel light). Stopped. Filled gas again (once again half
empty). But this time the gauge returned to full when I filled the tank.
Since then it's been a reliable indicator as to when I have half a tank
left.
Dealer told me he could fix it as it's still under warranty (was a leftover
'99 in the crate bought last summer) but it just hasn't been a big priority
on my list........since I know I have half a tank left and I can't ride more
than 250 miles anyways without getting off the bike for a break, it just
doesn't bother me much.......just serves as a reminder that I'm on the
second half of the tank and I need to start paying attention to the odo.
