Speaking of rentals and Hondas (not that this in any way helps the
original poster), my wife and I were in Hawaii in March and rented a
Honda Reflex 250cc scooter for a couple of days of putting around Oahu.

We had the choice between that and a little Magna (600cc, maybe?) and I
left it up to Stephanie. After sitting on both, she picked the scooter
because it was more comfy, plus it had the cuteness factor going for it.
The other plus was that it had a huge trunk under the seat, which could
fit a full face helmet easily, and a lockable "glove box". That was
great for carrying lunches, beach stuff, and towels.

It was kind of a fun thing to do. We put 190 miles on it in two days,
which is a lot when you're on an island 50 miles wide. The little 250
had ample power for carrying both of us. It was NOT fast by any stretch
(though the dude at the rental place was boasting about it), but I did
have fun dusting all the other little Honda 80 and 50cc scooters around
Waikiki. 8-) But it actually had enough power to get us up big hills
without slowing down at all and it did 70mph pretty easy. (I couldn't
find a long enough road to test its top speed, though the speedo read
100mph)

It had pretty good rain protection and got about 70mpg. In all I was
pretty impressed with it. If you had to have a scooter, it's probably
the best there is. That said, I wouldn't pay the US$6000 honda wants
for one, nor feel comfortable taking it on a highway on the continent.

Oh, the worst part was that since it's an auto, the clutch lever is NOT
the clutch lever, but the back brake. You can guess how much fun that
was. I got many a clunk on the back of the head when stopping quickly
for a light or whatnot and grabbing a handful of the not-clutch.

The other funny thing was that I got waves from all the sportbikers on
the island. I think the funky new-vfr look of it and the fact that we
were actually on the "highway" with it had them fooled.

Laters,
Brian
