[ST] Police Survivor Run - Philadelphia, PA

Hi gang,

The Sunday Police Survivors Run was the largest ride I've ever done.  I
met up with a few (non-Sprint riding) friends at Deptford mall.  It was
cool watching the estimated 10,000 bikes pulling out of the park and
across the Walt Whitman. Route 42 was closed for us. About an hour and a
half into the ride, we all stop by the side of the road for a pee break.
I dismount and remove my helmet just in time to watch an elderly couple
on a large HD touring rig plow into a single rider on a small standard
fifty yards ahead.  The bike pitched to the right and the force flung
the passenger off to the left hand side. She came to rest in the middle
of the lane, lying on her back. The rider stayed with the bike as it
went down on the right side and spun around facing traffic. His leg was
broken badly but I didn't see it firsthand. The guy they ran into wasn't
hurt. Traffic was held up for about a half hour and many emergency
vehicles arrived.

I think the guy in front slowed too quickly or the elderly rider didn't
stop fast enough.  Either way, it was human error. It could have been
worse. Had we not stopped I wouldn't have seen it at all. That was my
biggest concern of the day, that someone else might take me out with all
those bikes in proximity in bad weather.  That's what happened and it
ruined the event for me.  Headed for home shortly thereafter.  This
preoccupied my thoughts for the rest of the day Sunday and even now I'm
haunted by it.  The sight of that bike tumbling down the road and the
sound of it were chilling.  I've never seen anything like that.
