I believe the manual says not to open the throttle when starting, as the ECU
does it all for you - so if opening the throttle solves your problem, I
wonder if it has something to do with a fault or water in the idle air
stepper motor?  I think a few of the earlier bikes had problems with these
and it's on the service list to check the setup of the stepper motor.  That
wouldn't explain why Andrew's bike started on one cylinder, then the next,
then the third...unless the differences in compression levels between the
cylinders are enough to cause that.

Heck, it's just a guess, I'm in the US, my ST is in Scotland and I haven't
ridden it since April!
