RE: [ST] Chain stretch question...

Alex,

That is not normal stretch for a new chain.

You may not have gotten the bolt tightened enough after adjusting the chain.
Adding the weight of the passenger and the extra miles may have been enough
to allow the adjuster to slacken the chain.

Try adjusting the chain again and tighten the pinch bolt to 55NM (about as
tight as you can with the tool kit wrench) and you should be OK.

If you ride in particularly wet conditions, you may have some grit in the
concentric hub that needs to be cleaned out.

Subject: [ST] Chain stretch question...

I changed the chain on my '00 ST very recently, installing an X-ring chain &
new sprockets.

After carefully adjusting the chain per the book (i.e., on the main stand,
adjust so that there is 35-40 mm (about 1.1/4 - 1.1/2") vertical movement),
I went out for a short ride - virtually no evident stretch after about 70
miles. The second ride was today - about 225 miles, with a passenger this
time - and just got back. I noticed that I was getting a vibration that
shouldn't have been there and have just checked the chain. On the main
stand, there is now 55mm ( just over 2") play.

Has anybody got any ideas what I'm doing wrong here, or is that normal
stretch for the first use?

Thanks!

Alex
