RE: [ST] Close Call this Morning

Paul,

I'm pinning my hopes on going to the California Superbike School to help
learn the emergency braking thing. I've done some practicing coming off the
freeway to stop signs, purposefully waiting longer than normal to reduce
speed, or stopping fast and early if there isn't traffic behind me. Any
thoughts from listers who have taken these classes on their ability to teach
emergency manuevers is *very* appreciated. I have to justify the cost to my
wife.

As far as how you could have handled your situation better, I have one
suggestion. Cover your brake always when in the carpool lane. That extra
little time can make a difference. Sounded like from your description of the
incident that you didn't have the brake covered to begin with.

Don't beat yourself up...If you had tried to out-brake him, he probably
would have finally noticed you, got scared, and braked hard himself. That'd
make two of you trying to brake out the situation. Keep the gear low and the
brake covered to give yourself the choice of gravity-storm avoidance
methods.
