I doubt it's this simple, but when I tried to start my RS after a winter
lay-off I had similar symptoms. The reason .... I wasn't holding in the
clutch while pressing the starter.

However the fact that your headlights go dim suggests it might be something
more serious eg: seized starter motor :-(
