Yeah, and I thought it was settled too.  I was using WD40 to clean but in
the last go 'round it was pointed out that WD40 has amazing penetrating
capabilities and it's solvents can get into the sealed O ring areas and
clean out your permanent lubbing too.  

Some others pointed out some good stuff for cleaning lately, and I still
like Hondalube the best for lubbing as it doesn't sling off (apply to a
warm chain for best results).  You do need to lube IMHO to reduce
sprocket and roller wear on the chain, as well as to keep off the light
rust and corrosion that will result if you don't.

Just MHO, FWIW, YMMV.
