[ST] motor oil question: conventional or synthetic?

Hey all,

I bought a 2001 Sprint St (Sapphire blue) not long ago and I'm totally
in love with it. If my clutch cable had not already snapped, I would
have no complaints at all. But that's another topic. I have a
question about the motor oil.

I had my new bike service done at 600 miles. Now, I'm just above 3000
miles. I've talked to a technician at my dealer who tells me that
Triumph does not require another oil change until 6000 miles. But,
this guy personally recommended that I get it done at 3000. So, is he
right to recommend this, or is he just looking for more business?

I also had a discussion with a friend who also owns a 2001 Sprint ST.
He says that his dealer (not the same as mine) put synthetic oil in at
600 miles, and that it should last a long time (till 6000 miles? or
more?). Now, my dealer gave me no reason to believe that synthetic
oil was put in my bike, so I'm assuming conventional oil was used. Is
there a standard practice? Should synthetic oil always be used? And
if so, how long before changing it.

Also, any tips on changing oil myself? Do most people do this
themselves? I understand that I'll have to take off at least one of
the fairings. How much hastle is it?

Thanks everyone!
