I could be wrong, but my understanding is that, in terms of engine oil
anyway, "energy conserving" simply means lower viscosity.
For example, 5W/30 has lower viscosity across its operating temperature
range than traditional multigrades like 10W/40 (or 15W/50 for that matter),
and thereby reduces oil drag inside the engine.
Lower drag = less energy loss = energy conserving.
