Brian,

I'm looking at my Haynes Sprint shop manual and it doesn't appear to me
that you can determine anything by looking through the hole of the
balancer shaft plug.  Reading the procedure for installing the balancer
shaft implies that you must align the marks on the driven gear with the
marks on the drive gear attached to the crankshaft.  The pictures show
this alignment being checked in a location just to the rear of the plug
(with the cases split, of course).  It doesn't appear to me that the
part of the shaft exposed by the plug has anything to do with checking
alignment of the two shafts.  There certainly is no description in the
manual that indicates this hole is used for anything; perhaps it's just
there as a result of machining.
