The sensor is electronic in the front wheel hub, not mechanical, so no need
to lube the cable.  It could be water in the sensor, faulty/wet contacts at
the back of the speedo (unlikely unless you've ridden through a tidal wave)
or slipping magnet as someone else mentioned.
