chuck,
my wife and i have used a hjc-50 for two years with
out any problems. i find that the internal
(non-replacable) battery will last 3 to 4 long days
(i'm talking 300 to 500 mile days) on one charge. when
we are on the road, i charge every 3rd day, and it has
never run down on me during a ride.
sounds like the battery in yours might be toast. it
does take the unit over-night to charge fully. a few
hours will NOT do it.
and, take a small elastic mouth plastic bag with you
to slip over it when it rains. it will quit working if
it gets wet (don't ask how i know). i set it in the
sun all day the next day and it has worked fine ever
since.
i have found the little box to be very reliable and an
incrediable bargan.
ymmv... good luck,
dennis dodd, the earth dawg
