Thanks for the responses:

When you say trailing end of the plastic protector do you mean toward the
front of the bike?

No. I mean the end nearest the rear axle This is where it's being ground
away.

.The procedure quoted in the service manual assumes that the bike is on the
centrestand

Well,that's how I've been adjusting it and measuring it. I think I'm keeping
it within specs, so tomorrow I'll take another look at it. If all seems OK
('cept the grinding away), I guess it'll become a dealer issue, and perhaps
a warranty one too.
