Lisa,
I use a medium sized pair of "channel lock" - type pliers which
have a thinner profile.  Works like a charm & much cleaner!

If you're really obsessive about having the ultimate tool for the
application, Snap-on makes a neat plier - type tool YA4050A which
works very well on our bikes.
