The nut on the muffler side is the one that holds the wheel on to the 
splines, so if that's tight, it sounds like you have a bearing problem. 
Does the wheel move independently of the swingarm, or does the whole 
assembly move?

I checked Old Shep's rear end, and he seems pretty tight (33,000km). No 
apparent movement.

I have no experience of the Haynes manual for the ST, but my experience 
with them is that they're usually a lot cheaper than the factory ones, and 
you get what you pay for.
