True, it is heavier than the Sprint, and as someone else said, more
expensive. But I don't think it's near as big as an ST1100.
Dry weights:
Sprint ST 456lbs
FJR1300 521lbs
Honda ST1100 635lbs
And that's for a stock Sprint ST. With hard side bags and luggage rack,
the sprint would be close to 500, I imagine. Adding those two options
would also bring the US$10800 base price of a Sprint ST up higher than
the Yamaha's US$11499.
Last spring when I was looking for a new bike, I looked at the ST1100 and
sat on one. They are big bikes, and heavy. Granted, I've never seen
an FJR1300 in person, but I picture them being more the size of a
Blackbird. If the FJR had been available this time last year, I think I
probably would have gotten that instead of my ST.
Well, maybe not, since I couldn't have bought a used one, like I did the
Sprint. The other deciding factor would probably be insurance. There's
no way I'd pay anywhere near as little for a 1300cc japanese bike as I
do for the sprint.
In short: I need to quit ogling the Yamaha and get out and ride my baby
more. Especially now that that freaky cold front is gone and highs are
around 75F this week.
I did at least get out and wash the bike today. Tom, if you thought it
was dirty that time before, you wouldn't want to have seen it when I
got back from Big Bend. After 1750 miles of dust, bugs, some rain, and some
dirt/gravel roads, it was not a pretty sight.
Laters,
Brian
