RE: [ST] 5&6 gear neutral

Val,

You've found a 'false neutral'. I've been able to find those in every bike
I've owned and a few borrowed ones. For me, It's due to laziness. The ST
likes you to be firm in shifting. The shift lever has some play in it that
you have to overcome before any actual movement inside the transmission
occurs.

I adjusted my shift lever down a little, which helps some, though not as
much as just being very positive with the foot during shifts. Be careful
not to adjust the shift lever too far. There are some clearance issues
between linkage parts and if you turn the threaded rod out too far, there
will not be enough threads left to keep a good grip. Some have put the one
piece shifter from the (Daytona?) on the ST. This eliminates the linkage
and the play at the cost of some clearance for your foot.

In the last month I have twice experienced a dead spot (neutral if you will)
