The difference is simple misremembering, not that it matters much; the
difference is less than 1%. The actual conversion between miles and km is
1.609344 (exact).
(2.54 cm/in * 12 in/ft * 5280 ft/mi) / (100 cm/m * 1000 m/km) = 1.609344
km/mi.
