My $0.02 (and why I have done it) is that people from the United States are 
very unpopular all around the world.  Everyone loves the Canadians.  So, if 
you are traveling, it is better to have those around you think that you are 
Canadian.

Bad accents and bad manners?

Please! I'll ask a simple question to those that mock your friends to the
north: Why do American students sew Canadian flags on their backpacks while
traveling the world?
