Dang, you're right about the 50s.  I guess I was thinking of the
Spitfire, maybe?  In my own defense, I did put a question mark after I
said it.

I believe it had 8 machine guns.

A P-51 had 6 .50 cal. machine guns. The only American fighter with 8 .50s
was the P-47. One model of a Spitfire had 12 .30 cal. machine guns.
