http://www.dot.ca.gov/hq/LandArch/scenic_highways/scruz.htm
shows your choices to get back onto 101 if you don't take 68 from
Monterey to Salinas.
Hwy 129 is a nice, flat sweeper river canyon shot that I use when 152
looks to be crowded with tourists.
152 is a pretty turn-y uphill ride to ~1500ft; great views of the
Pajaro Valley. Safe passing is a prob tho.
17 is my daily commute. Only 2 sets of turns to get excited about, but
if time is tight it should be fine going north in the late afternoon.
9 would be too technical for you after riding up from S. Cal all day.
The 1/17 interchange tends to get awfully impacted in the late
afternoon, which could add 10-20 minutes to get from Watsonville to
Santa Cruz.
Certainly taking in Big Sur is worth the extra time. The journey is the
reward, as they say.
