Re: [ST] NEW OWNER - SYDNEY- AUSTRALIA

Yeah, the fuel gauge is somewhat useless. Mine nosedives to the red square,
the same as yours, and then droops slowly. The bottom of the red actually
coincides well with the fuel warning lamp. I get 200 miles +/- 1 or so
before the lamp comes on. There's apparently a gallon left at that point; it
takes 4.3 gal. to fillup.

The front on my '01 was twitchy sensitive when I first got it, but worked
itself slowly slack, maybe not much worse than you describe. My '02 has been
somewhat slack since new. The discussion here some time ago was that
squeezing the lever hard and holding it a few seconds, repeated a few times,
takes up the slack at the calipers. The explanation was something about the
pistons and rubber dust boots; whatever. I now make it part of my pre-ride
check. (Well, not really. I do it at the stop light a few miles up the road,
when the slop reminds me.) I ride with the lever on position 4, closest to
the bar. The squeeze trick only works with the larger throw on position 1.

The gearbox smooths out soon enough; well before 500 miles. Buttery smooth
up and down, clutchless; on rare occassion, 4th klunks out before really
engaging. The only gearbox I've ridden that was smoother is my brother's '97
VFR (heretical, I know); that one feels like warm butter compared to the
ST's plain butter.

Some have written to complain that the ST's clutch is a bit heavy. I have to
agree a little. Toward the end of a really long day, I have to use three
fingers at stops. Don't let it get to ya; just use more fingers until your
grip catches up.

Mike.
