[ST] Lane splitting, lane sharing, filtering (was: Various Items for a new member to the list...)

In a previous email, Harries, Mort stated:

Ahhhh. So THAT would explain all the brain damaged chimpanzees that I
encounter on the roads of NJ!

I, like you, commute daily from NJ to NYC. As for d**kheads and
a**holes, I would have to say that they are far outnumbered by courteous
people. For every person that has intentionally cut me off thirty have
given me more room.

When I moved to NJ I tried to find out if lane splitting was illegal.
The manual for motorcycle riders only has a reference to "lane sharing."
It says that it is advised against. I researched further, including
scanning the motor vehicle laws and could find no reference to lane
splitting, lane sharing or filtering. I learned from someone that
although it is not illegal, if the officer is in a bad mood or you've
been doing it recklessly, you will receive a ticket for improper lane
change.

As for lane splitting in NYC, I have been pulled over at the Lincoln
Tunnel entrance three times. The first time I filtered past a cop in a
car. He radioed ahead and had me stopped. Upon his arrival he proceeded
to read me the riot act. I "yessir"ed and "nosir"ed him to death, he
checked my papers and I rode away without a ticket. The second time one
cop told me to go around the line of cars, and the next cop pulled me
over. (I wish you guys would formulate a policy and stick with it.)
Again, no ticket, just a paper check. The last time, a female cop
stopped me. No riot act. No paper check. No ticket. Just a "What a
beautiful bike!" Yep, women are a sucker for sapphire blue!

My weirdest encounter with a d**khead happened on Worth St. in lower
Manhattan. This guy swerves to complete block my path. I swear at him.
He jumps out of his car and starts to lecture me. Not yell at me, but
actually tell me, in a nasally voice, that I shouldn't be doing that. I
figure that this is some dork or geek that just crashed his hard drive
w/o back-up. As he gets back into his car I notice a gun in a belt clip.
Perhaps a a LEO? At the entrance to the Holland Tunnel I see him take
the side entrance off Hudson that cops use.
