As you check your chain for free play, check it in various locations
around the chain (spin the wheel) and you should find that some spots read
tighter than others.  For example you may find 35mm of freeplay with it in
one position, roll it around and you may find more or less in another
position.  Accourding to the manuals, we're to adjust the free play to be
35-40mm in the tightest spot, which means it'll be a bit looser in other
spots.  

Another clue that your chain is reaching the end of it's life is frequent
need for adjustment.  Yet another test is to grab it from the back side of
the rear sprocket and see if you can pull it out away from the sprocket
any.

And don't forget to check that chain rubbing strip for wear, my chain had
started getting into the strip's top mounting bolt before I caught it.
