[ST] RE: belts

Bare,

About 18 months ago, I was helping (in an administrative sense) Jürgen
Bleimund bring out a belt drive for single-sided swinging arm Trumpets
(they share the same geometry). The kit was just about to hit the market
when his prototype (i.e. the belt) went phut - after about 2000 km. He
decided not to proceed after that! Shame, it seemed like a really neat
piece of work. I think he's since removed his web article.

I think that the variable tension associated with a swinging arm has
something to do with it, though the ST's geometry results in only a very
small difference between centres: 0.57 mm !

For the record, a couple of German firms have used belts with bikes
rated well over 100 bhp, with allegedly good longevity, one of which is
http://www.vh-motorradtechnik.de/.

Regards,
