If the forks are like the ST's, then I believe that they are damping rod
forks.

What would a stiffer spring do for us?  I'm about 210 sans gear/bags and
don't like cranking up the preload either.  Makes the bike get all squirmy
if I'm behind a truck or something that makes for a large "wash".  

I've just started looking into doing something for the front end, such as
RaceTech springs and maybe Gold Valve emulators, but besides the
prohibitively expensive Ohlins/Penske's for the rear don't know what else
I could do.  If a stiffer spring is the answer, do tell!
